Belongings of Well-Known Illustrator and Science Researcher Margaret Gilliard Person to Be Sold at Auction

Selected items of the late Margaret Gilliard Person, a world-renowned illustrator, natural history collector and historical explorer will be sold at auction on Tues., Aug. 4 by Teel Auctions of Mt. Bethel, Pa.

Ms. Gilliard Person died in September 2008 at the age of 91. In 1991 she was a subject of a report in the New York Times based on her activities collecting birds and habitat materials for the American Museum of Natural history, beginning in the 1940s.

Descriptions of her lengthy expeditions and collecting activities appeared in detailed articles published in Natural History magazine and other science-oriented publications.

She also made collecting and observational trips to remote areas of New Guinea, the Phillipines and other remote areas of the world. Her first husband was the late Tom Gilliard, a well-known ornithologist who specialized in recovering information about birds in undeveloped regions of the world. She was later married to Joseph Bill Person, where both were long-time residents of Pocono Pines in Monroe County.

Teel Auctions will sell furniture, personal belongings and an antique canoe, all items collected by Gilliard Person during her time in the Poconos.
